The world around us seems to spin faster and faster, everything is a blur. Yet, there is a cushion of calm at the center of your life, where you can live in union with Jesus Christ the Living God. The news media makes every effort to stoke fear in the hearts of subscribers. It does not matter the supposed source of the fear; COVID 19, COVID Variants, inflation, rising gasoline prices, tornados, earthquakes, or war. None of this has caused God to shutter or muse, “What should I do?” He is not surprised by the evil of humanity towards one another nor rampant disease. God loves this fallen world and every person in it, the good, the bad, and the ugly. He has done everything in Jesus Christ to free us from this blur of emotions and fears.
Don’t get trapped into a posture of demanding to know “Why?” That is the wrong question to ask God. The wisest of wise will never know the why? There are better questions: “How do You (God) want me to view this situation?” and/or “What do You (God) want me to do right now?” We cannot change the past; we must start with the present and seek to find our way forward into God’s plan for our lives and for this world. Look about you and see where God is already working. Join Him in this work until He gives you more to do.
All God Work begins on the knees. Prayer is the beginning point of contact with God. Take your Bible to a quiet place with no distractions. A Prayer Closet, a War Room. Poor out all your fears, doubts, and thoughts to Him. Then listen! He may direct you to a Bible passage or He may overwhelm you with Peace. God is continually working in you and in the people all about you. He wants you to pour yourself out to Him and He wants to give you the peace of His radiant presence. Return to this soothing place as often as you can, for this is where you are energized: filled with Jesus’ love, Jesus’ Joy, and Jesus’ Peace.
The Hebrew language and the Jewish people have a wonderful word, “Shalom.” We so often hear or read Shalom and think “peace.” It is a much richer word and concept than just the absence of turmoil or worry. The noun shalom has the more literal meaning of being in a state of wholeness or being without deficiency. In Jesus Christ we can have this blessing, but we must turn from the noise and blur of life, this crazy world, and the passionate pursuit of our plans and goals. Embrace Him! In Jesus Christ we are whole and without deficiency.
In Numbers 6.24-26 God told Aaron, Moses’ brother the first Hebrew Priest to bless the people with this blessing:
“The Lord bless you and keep you…
YHWH will kneel before you, presenting gifts and will guard you with a hedge of protection.
“…the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you…
YHWH illuminate the wholeness of His being toward you bringing order and give you comfort and sustenance.
“…the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.”
YHWH lift up His wholeness of being and look upon you and set in place all you need to be whole and complete.
